Argentina’s name comes from the Latin word meaning “silver”. The origin of the name comes from the first Spanish conquerors’ travels to the River Plate. The shipwrecked people of Diaz de Solis expedition met the Indians in the region who gave them silver objects as presents. When they returned to Spain in 1524 they spoke about the existence of the Silver Hills, a mountain full of metal.
